The Art of the National Parks: Coloring Book

The Art of the National Parks: Coloring Book by Fifty-Nine Parks features poster sized and stylized line art renderings from the popular Fifty Nine Parks print series.

This is a really neat coloring book. It also has information on the parks. It includes 63 US National Parks.

You can find this on Amazon.

Does anyone else like coloring? Even as an adult, I find it quite calming.

I love the information on the opposite page.

Have you ever been to a National Park?

Cute Halloween Books

Halloween is around the corner. Here are two adorable books to read to your little ones.
One Black Cat by Robie Rogge and Illustrated by August Ro is a really neat board book. Conjure up the perfect Halloween with this 3D novelty board book.

Open it up and look inside. I think black cats get a bad reputation. I personally love them.
This book is good for ages 1 to 5.

In a Spooky Haunted House is a really cool pop-up book. This is by Joel Stern and illustrated by Christopher Lee. Good for ages 3 to 5.

Go on a haunted Halloween adventure through a spooky house in this sturdy book.

I used to love pop-up books as a kid. I am so glad my own kids get to see this.

Both of these books are from Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing company.

Check out their books here.

What is your favorite Halloween book? Do you like scary stories?

The Little Kitten By Nicola Killen

The Little Kitten by Nicola Killen is a cute book for the kids, especially around fall and Halloween.
The illustrations are sweet with black and white and autumn colors. I like stories about cats.
My almost 4 year old is getting more into books and story time.
Autumn is my favorite season too.
The suggested reading ages is 4 to 8. Which I agree is the right age.
I think overall this is a lovely book to share with your children.

Nicola Killen has other books such as The Little Rabbit and The Little Reindeer.

You can find this book on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Five Children's Books For Back to School

If I Built a School

IF I BUILT A SCHOOL

If Jack built a school, there would be hover desks and pop-up textbooks, skydiving wind tunnels and a trampoline basketball court in the gym, a robo-chef to serve lunch in the cafeteria, field trips to Mars, and a whole lot more. The inventive boy who described his ideal car and house in previous books is dreaming even bigger this time.

We really liked this one. It is so cute and I love that it shows kids imaginations. We all wanted our schools to have something cool inside. What would you want in your school? I remember kids wanting vending machines. Or maybe fast food for lunch.

I remember when my kids were in kindergarten. It was exciting for them but scary at the same time. And it was hard to be in class that many hours. Pre school was only a couple of hours a day. So the transition was a little tough. My youngest isn't in school yet. She loves to look at the pictures in the books.

Raise Your Hand

When Alice Tapper noticed that the girls in her class weren't participating as much as the boys, she knew she had to do something about it. With help from her Girl Scout troop and her parents, she came up with a patch that other girls could earn if they took a pledge to be more confident in school. Alice even wrote an op-ed about the experience for the New York Times! Inspired by that piece, this picture book illustrates her determination, bravery, and unwillingness to accept the status quo. With Marta Kissi's delightful illustrations depicting Alice's story, young readers everywhere will want to follow Alice's lead and raise their hand!

AUTHOR BIO

Alice Paul Tapper, 11, is a Girl Scout and sixth grader in Washington, D.C., where she lives with her mom and dad, brother, and her two dogs Winston and Clementine. This is her first book.

ILLUSTRATOR BIO

Marti Kissi is an illustrator living and working in London. She studied illustration and animation at Kingston University and completed her MA at the Royal College of Art. She now works on various children's book projects as well as covers and editorial pieces for both children and adults.

I'm Trying to Love Math

I’m Trying to Love Math

Do multiplication tables give you hives? Do you break out in a sweat when you see more than a few numbers hanging out together? Then I'm Trying to Love Math is for you! In her signature hilarious style, Bethany Barton introduces readers to the things (and people) that use math in amazing ways -- like music, and spacecraft, and even baking cookies! This isn't a how-to math book, it's a way to think differently about math as a necessary and cool part of our lives!

AUTHOR BIO

Bethany Barton is an author-illustrator and member of the Motion Picture Union. She works on art, prop, and set decoration for film and TV, and has worked on shows such as The Muppets and Blackish. She and her family live in Los Angeles.

I think this one is so cute. Math can be really tough. Now that my kids are in school, math has changed. It is hard for me to help them. I like the way I learned. My daughter likes it now in 2nd grade. It will get harder for her along the way.

Goodbye Friend, Hello Friend!

Change and transitions are hard, but Goodbye, Friend! Hello, Friend! demonstrates how, when one experience ends, it opens the door for another to begin. It follows two best friends as they say goodbye to snowmen, and hello to stomping in puddles. They say goodbye to long walks, butterflies, and the sun...and hello to long evening talks, fireflies, and the stars. But the hardest goodbye of all comes when one of the friends has to move away. Feeling alone isn't easy, and sometimes new beginnings take time. But even the hardest days come to an end, and you never know what tomorrow will bring.

AUTHOR BIO

Cori Doerrfeld illustrated the acclaimed picture book The Rabbit Listened, as well as popular books like Little Bunny Foo Foo: The Real Story and The True Adventures of Esther the Wonder Pig. She lives with her family in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

OwlCrate Subscription Box Review

OwlCrate

Recently, I have been enjoying some really good books and graphic novels. I found my love for reading again. I discovered a whole world of bookstagram on Instagram. Book lovers taking gorgeous photos of books. Makes it all the more enticing to read. Of course, don't always judge a book by its cover.

I subscribed to a fun box called OwlCrate. They have monthly themes. The month I started with was Comic Explosion. I adore comics, manga, and graphic novels.

Inside OwlCrate

Inside we find books and accessories. This was the perfect crate to start with for me. It also came with a Funko, which is a slight addiction for our family.

OwlCrate Subscription Box

At first my favorite thing was the Funko. Wonder Woman rocks! The coffee candy was yummy too. I drink coffee every day. The pen was super cool. I think my hubby took it from me.

I finally got around to reading Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia. This book brought me back to high school days and also hit home to my introverted personality. I blog and love to be on social media, but in person I hold back. I loved all of the characters. My favorite was Wallace. His story line was very touching.

I have subscribed to different boxes before and found OwlCrate to be a favorite. I switched to OwlCrate jr for my kids. Reading is important and it looks like something my son can enjoy.

Have you read any good books lately?

Harvest Unexpected Projects Using 47 Extraordinary Garden Plants Book Review

Harvest By Stefani Bittner and Alethea Harampolis

In the recent years of my life, I have been looking towards natural remedies and healthier products. Harvest by Stefani Bittner and Alethea Harampolis gives us 47 uses of garden plants. The recipes range from food to dye. All of the instructions are easy to follow and the photography is great.
I never realized how many garden plants could be used, especially for food. Before each recipe or DIY project there is a description of the plant being used. It also tells you when to harvest the plant.

3 Recipes/DIY projects I want to try this summer:

-Rosewater Facial Toner

Said to be the perfect scent for a fragrance minimalist like me. I have gotten quite sensitive towards smells, especially perfume. I like the more natural scents such as rose and lavender.

- Pomegranate Margarita

I love margaritas. Pomegranate flavor would be great for the summer.

-Smudge Sticks

Smudge sticks are dried herb bundles that are burnt as incense. In the book, rosemary branches are used. I also like the idea of mental clarity and calmness.

This book has such amazing ideas. I'd like to eventually try all of them.

The authors are co-founders of Homestead Design Collective. It is a design landscape firm that creates beautiful gardens that provide harvest. What a wonderful company. I dream of having a nice bit of land to have a garden and grow my own veggies.

This book would be great for any garden enthusiast.

POMEGRANATE MARGARITA
Classic cocktail meets holiday tradition, compliments of Stefani’s mom, Garna, who took the margarita and dressed it with a splash of festive red. Whether you are making a single glass or a pitcher, the ratio of the ingredients stays the same. Use more lime juice if you prefer a tart margarita or more pomegranate juice if you prefer it sweeter.

MAKES 4 DRINKS

1 cup of your favorite tequila
1 cup triple sec
½ cup fresh pomegranate juice (from about 2 pomegranates)
½ cup fresh lime juice
Large-grained salt such as kosher or flake salt
Lime slice
Ice cubes
Handful of pomegranate seeds, for garnish

Combine the tequila, triple sec, and both juices in a pitcher and stir thoroughly. Pour the salt onto a small plate. Rub the lime slice around the rim of each glass, and then dip the rims in the salt. Pour the margarita over ice in the salt-rimmed glasses. For a seasonal festive touch, garnish with the pomegranate seeds.

Do you have a garden? What do you like to grow?

Second Chance A Mother's Quest for a Natural Birth After Cesarean Book Review and Giveaway

Second Chance By Thais Nye Derich

Motherhood. Birth. All experiences are different for each person. There are mothers who have children through birth. There are mothers who have children through adoption. Some mothers give birth vaginally and others through cesarean. Which ever way your story goes, it is your story and nobody should ever judge you for it. Being pregnant and giving birth is one of the hardest things I've ever gone through.

Second Chance: A Mother's Quest for a Natural Birth After a Cesarean is a heart warming story about the Author's choice and quest for a different birth the second time around. She goes through a lot of self discovery through the process. I enjoy reading and hearing of other women's birth stories. In a way, its a sense of connecting and knowing that we all go through similar situations. Sometimes these experiences are hard and upsetting.

In the beginning of the book the author shares about calling her birth mother/biological mother. There is a sentence that the mom says that seems harsh and sad. I already started crying and its only the beginning of the book. Being adopted the book already hits home. But as a 6 month old I luckily had no memories of my motherland. Thais was a young child, with 2 other siblings when her mother gave them up. I couldn't even imagine leaving my 3 kids. Sure some days they make me nuts and I want to jump in the car and drive. As mothers we go through many emotions and this starts at pregnancy.

In this book, you will see that the first birth can be scary and nerve wracking. You can read all the books and take breathing classes but situations can occur to make your perfect birth...well, not what you had hoped for. I too had a rough first birth, but it didn't end in a cesarean. Some of my family members think it should have. I wasn't happy with the first birth and with my 2nd and 3rd I did not want any more vacuum assisted births. My second birth happened to be the easiest...and when I say easy, it wasn't painless. It was the quickest.

I really like that the author, Thais Derich has become an advocate for mothers to be more well informed. It is possible to have a natural birth after a cesarean but there are hospitals that do not like the risk. You need to seek out other sources and learn what is right for you and your family.

I have known moms who have had only cesareans, I myself have had 3 vaginal births. I also have a friend who needed to have a cesarean the second time around. I think the main thing is that we all want healthy and happy babies.

Please pick up a copy of this book on Amazon, release day will be May 9.

I have a copy of the book to giveaway to one of my readers. Maybe you know a mom who went through a similar situation like the author did or maybe you went through it too.

Do you have a birth story or an adoption story? I'd love to read them in the comments.

POP: 50 Amazing Secrets to a Successful Labor & Delivery or C-Section Book Review

POP by Pamela Peery

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of a review. All thought and opinions are my own*

POP: 50 Amazing Secrets to a successful Labor & Delivery or C-Section by Pamela Peery is a collection of advice from new moms who just gave birth. These are stories of over 80 different women telling other women what they wish they had known earlier.

These days I don't get to read entire books that often. I enjoyed this book during my little one's naps. Reading through this book made me realize how nice it is to know other women's experiences, that you weren't alone in what you went through. I have two children, both were natural births but very different experiences. I remember being pregnant with my son and reading through as many pregnancy books as possible.

I would have enjoyed section 9 of this book. Advice and Encouragement- Women Not Getting an Epidural.
Tip #35 is make sure you practice relaxation techniques beforehand. Yes, I should have done that. I was lucky enough to have a doula, who was my friend by my side. Still the first time around was very hard. Apparently it didn't stop me from having #2.
I just want to clarify that I am not a natural birth snob, it's just something that happened.

At the end of the book there are a few funny stories, which I like. Sometimes you have to laugh instead of worry. I highly recommend this book for any pregnant moms out there. It is a wonderful handbook and has helpful advice inside. The book is slender enough to put in a pocketbook. Or even a diaper bag, if you another baby.
